Using the total gym for assisted and non-assisted squats allows the body to be in an upright, weight bearing position with approximately 50-65% of the body's weight loading through the feet. The benefits of total gym exercises include; maintenance of bone density, increased stimulation to lower extremities, increased circulation to lower extremities, a potential increase in joint stability, and a potential for improved functional improvement.
Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES), the RT300 is used to facilitate a contraction in the muscles of the lower extremities in a specific movement pattern. Surface electrodes are placed on muscle groups of either both or one side of the body. Quadriceps, Hamstrings, Gluteals, and Calf muscles can be selected depending on each individual. The benefits of using FES therapy include prevention of disuse atrophy, relaxation of muscle spasms, increase in local blood circulation, maintaining or increasing range of motion, and potential for maintenance of bone density.

The Hip and Back, Adductor, and Abductor machines allow the exercise therapists at SCI-FIT to incorporate plate loaded equipment which follows a natural and specific movement pattern. All of these specific pieces can be used with injuries of varying levels and abilities. The benefits of using the Hammer Strength equipment include increased strength, a potential for an increase in controlled movements, and they provide measurable outcomes.
The Johnny G Spin bike, the recumbent bike, and the Schwinn Airdyne all provide a different stimulus to the body. The action of biking in general is a form of active gait training, incorporating hip flexion/extension, and knee flexion/extension in clients with varying levels of ability. While integrating the core in a non-load bearing position, the client is also getting the benefit of many repetitions in a short amount of time.
