What has exercise based therapy done for me?
I was injured January of 2004 during cheerleading practice. I am a T12 incomplete. After my injury, I began to gain movement and feeling in my right leg, and a little feeling on my left thigh. I continued with traditional therapy for a year and a half learning how to walk with a kfo, afo leg brace, and crutches. After my time had "ran out" with outpatient rehab, I found exercised based therapy to be the next step in my recovery. I made the decision to join an exercise recovery program and workout three times a week each for two hours. I have been involved in exercise therapy for 2 years now and have seen improvement in my overall health. I have gained more feeling below my injury, have learned how to properly use the muscles I have without compensating, and find muscles I didn't know I had working. Being an athlete my whole life, this type of exercise therapy felt so right to me. To be a part of a program where I get the same sweat and workout I was used to, is a great feeling. It not only helps me physically, but mentally as well. I look forward to my workouts every week. It feels great to fight a battle that I was told would be impossible to fight.
