What has exercise based therapy done for me?
I survived a catastrophic bicycle accident in January 2008, breaking my
neck in two places. After surgery I was left paralyzed from the chest down
and was told I had very little chance of ever walking again or of even
using my hands. For me the thought of being in a wheelchair and not being
able to feed myself was just not acceptable. After spending 5 weeks in
Kaiser Vallejo Rehab Center I was discharged and sent on my way with only
limited PT/OT for the next 2 1/2 months. A friend happened to show me an
article in the paper about SCI-FIT and I immediately thought this was
exactly what I needed. I began coming in June and have made incredible
progress, thanks to the wonderful trainers who have encouraged me and
pushed me to my limits. I am now able to walk (unaided), use my hands to
some extent and have regained strength in my entire body, using muscles I
didn't know I had. I am optimistic that I will continue to make progress
and will one day be back on a bike again.
